A loyal reader, and my sister, have both discovered Agatha Christie recently. This is a great moment in anyone’s reading life. I will never forget finding Death on the Nile in the school library. So I thought I’d do a list of underrated classic detective fiction. This is an attempt to list some of the best work
I didn't know E.F. Benson wrote a detective novel. I know him from his horror stories and of course from Mapp & Lucia.
Would definitely second your Chesterton recommendation (judging from your comments I'm a much bigger fan of his non-mystery writings than you are.)
It's not a novel but in this vein I would recommend Dashiell Hammett's The Big Knockover and Other Stories, a collection of his Continental Op short stories.
